The Structure of Professional Tennis
There are many tennis events that help players gain rankings and prize money. For professions tennis players tournaments are divided into tours managed by the ATP for men and WTP for women. ATP is "Association of Tennis Professionals" and WTP stand for "Women's Tennis Association."
The main events in Professional Tennis are the four grand slam tournaments. These tournaments offer the most amount of prize money and also the most ranking points. Under the grand slams are the ATP and WTP tours. These are different tournaments that hold different ranking opportunity and prize money.
In order to get into ATP and WTP tournaments players must earn points to gain entry into these higher tournaments. for players to do so they enter lower-tier events called the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF (International Tennis Federation) events. These events allow players to earn points and improve their ranking to compete in the ATP and WTP.
Gaining entry into a grand slam tournament are mainly given to players based on their ATP and WTP ranking. Players with higher rankings from ATP/WTP tournaments over the past 52 weeks earn a direct acceptance into a grand slam event. However players who's rankings are not high enough for direct acceptance can enter a grand slam in qualifying rounds. During qualifying rounds, players face off in a small tournament where they compete for a few remaining places in the main draw. A player’s ranking points help determine their eligibility for these qualifying rounds, with those ranked higher having a greater opportunity to participate.
